Welcome to Fast Air Photography covering military aviation in the UK with photos, reports and articles on both the activities of the armed forces and photography. About Gordon Jones
I’ve long held an interest in photography but it started to get serious in 2003 after my first trip to the Goodwood Festival of Speed motor sport event. Starting with a lowly Canon compact film camera (anyone remember film?) I photographed the cars but felt very limited by it when it came to shooting them in motion. The next year I returned with a digital Canon compact camera. A couple bridge cameras followed until I had purchased my first digital SLR in 2005. At the same event saw the stunning low level display of a South African Airways Boeing 747-400. This sparked a long lost interest in aviation. Shortly afterwards I made my first visits to my local military airfield, RAF Cottesmore, to shoot the Harriers. This became a regular occurrence and soon I was visiting other RAF airfields. In 2006, I decided to try low level aviation photography. I had seen a pair of USAF F-15E Strike Eagles flying through the Lakes in 2001 when I was passing through the area and had long wanted to get a photo of them doing that. At the time I didn’t think I would ever be able to but since then I had come across photos of low level military aircraft on the internet and that had spurred me on. After researching the subject as much as I could I made my first visit to LFA7 to photograph what the RAF does best, tactical low level flying. A great first day was had and I return to the area as much as I can and the weather will allow. You can follow me on Twitter where I intend to post updates from air shows, any updates made to this site and other random photography / aviation comments. EquipmentUp until mid September 2010 I’ve been a Canon shooter. I owned the EOS 20D, 30D, 40D, 1D Mark II and 7D with lenses from the 70-300 right through to the 300 f/2.8 L IS but from the second half of September I made the swap to Nikon. If you are interested in the change take a look at my blog posts. Starting from my visit to RAF Waddington on the 30th September 2010 all my images on this site will be shot with Nikon kit. My current kit is: Nikon D300 with MB-D10 grip (x2) Recently Published WorkA selection of my recently published photos in magazines and other items. Magazines
